Watch Oprah Talk Weight, Diet Culture, and More in a New Special

0

Oprah released The State of Weight, a “Life You Want” Class and corresponding curriculum, here on Oprah Daily in fall 2023. In the months since, there have been countless cultural conversations about the subjects we covered—obesity as a medical disease (not a failure of willpower), the rise of weight loss drugs like Ozempic, and how body image affects our emotions.

The conversations are far from over. This week, Oprah is opening up another discussion about weight, in collaboration with WeightWatchers, to speak more about the shame, science, and societal aspects. In the virtual event, she’ll be joined by a group that has a wealth of knowledge and experience in this area, including Rebel Wilson and Busy Philipps, along with entrepreneurs Katie Sturino, the founder of Megababe, and Jamie Kern Lima, the founder of IT Cosmetics. The panel also includes experts like Rachel Goldman, PhD (a psychologist we tapped for our State of Weight discussion), and Ania Jastreboff, MD, PhD, the director of the Yale Obesity Research Center.

Oprah says the special will “unpack everything we’ve internalized about diet culture and how our weight somehow reflected our worth” as well as “dismantle the body standards that have caused so much shame and find the best way forward for each of us.” She hopes to change the conversation once again.

“Making the Shift: A New Way to Think About Weight” is a live, virtual event and will be viewable on YouTube on Thursday, May 9, at 6 p.m. EST. Find the sign-up here.

While you’re waiting to watch the new special, catch up on what started it all: Oprah Daily’s State of Weight discussion, as well as its corresponding curriculum, which you can read in full here.
